Inertia

Inertia is the label I am using to describe what has been keeping me from posting. “I will write a post tomorrow” or “I’ll do it this weekend.” But there have been many tomorrows and weekends without posts, and it seems that each day a post doesn’t happen, the possibility of a post happening at all decreases. It’s like a self-fulfilling prophecy. So in this moment, I am using the force to create a change in state, take that inertia!

What have I been up to? So much.

Good squad coverIn May, I read A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. If you like linear stories, this is not the book for you. The transitions are jarring: chapters jump forward and backward in time, the narrator varies, and the style changes drastically. Once you accept this, the book is quite enjoyable and leaves you thinking.

I had a brief period of haiku writing on twitter, which likewise rolled to a stop thanks to my friend inertia (I hope to rekindle this habit too). Here’s one that has been well received:

Friendship, life’s dessert

I moved! Also, moving is a lot of work! I practiced all sorts of adult skills: pricing and hiring movers, organizing moving schedules, forwarding mail, moving utilities, getting new internet, packing, etc. etc. etc. (<- that is code for “moving is a lot of work”).

What I am learning now is that once the moving is over, you are still not done! Next there is finding wall art, quilts, lampshades, etc. etc. etc. (<- code for “you are still not done!”). This will be a personal challenge because my natural reaction is to settle all such affairs quickly. This does not mesh well with the slower, more thoughtful pace of home improvements. I can’t imagine trying to settle in to a house…

Here I must include a special thanks to my parents who have been invaluable in the relocation process in so many ways: Thank you Mom and Dad! I will think of you when I use my vacuum cleaner and power drill.

There will be more posts on my new digs soon.

I dog sat – for six weeks out of the last ten. I love dogs – and particularly my dog, which my parents have now claimed as theirs – but this is a lot of dog sitting, and it was made doubly hard by the fact that it meant I was not at my new apartment. Soon though, soon.

I passed my business law class and gained a whole new appreciation for anyone who works full time while pursuing a degree. Introduction to business law is one small step on the long road to an MBA.

I’m going to the UK! In less than four weeks I’ll be on my way to conference on play and an overdue visit with some very special people I know. Destination suggestions and invitations to visit are welcome!

So despite an abundance of inertia here on my blog, there has been relatively little inertia in real life. And maybe that is the lesson here: you can only have so much in motion and the rest must naturally succumb to inertia.
